Augustus Pugin was the architect of the Gothic Revival, the designer of Big Ben and much of the Houses of Parliament. By 21, he had been shipwrecked, bankrupted and widowed; by 30 he had designed 22 churches and 3 cathedrals; at 40, insane and disillusioned, he was dead. Rosemary Hill s in conversation with writer and journalist Andrew O’Hagan about her biography, God’s Architect (Penguin).

8 Aug: Judge the Costa Children’s Book Award (ages 9-13)
Prize £100 in book tokens. Entrants must be aged 9-13 on 8 August. Submit a 200-word book review for the chance to be part of the judging panel for the 2009 Costa Book Awards Children’s Book Award. Winners selected by Jacqueline Wilson will be asked to read 9-12 books in September and October, attend a judging sesson with the 3 adult judges, and be invited to the gala dinner and presentation ceremony in Jan 2009 where they will receive £100 worth of book tokens. 15th August: Arvon Poetry Competition
Prizes: First - £5000, 2nd - £2500, 3rd - £1000. Plus 3 x commendations worth £500 each. Entry fee £6 per poem. Entry form required. Judges for 2008: Andrew Motion, Moniza Alvi and Alice Oswald. More info, entry form.

31 July: Sean O’Faolain Short Story Competition
Main prizes: €1,500, or €500 and publication in the literary biannual Southword. Entry fee: €10. This annual competition sponsored by the Munster Literature Centre is dedicated to Sean O’Faolain, who was one of Ireland’s most accomplished story writers. Open to original unpublished short stories in the English language of up to 3,000 in length. Nuala Ní Chonchúir is this year’s judge. More details.

30 September: Brand
Short stories to 2,500 words are sought for the Winter issue of this twice yearly publication. Submissions must be sent by post. More information.

30 Sept: Pulp Net Japan Short story competition
